The idea of an independent state of Finland was first raised in Kymenlaakso - the Kymi river valley on the border between Sweden and Russia more than 200 years ago. The conspiracy known as the Anjala Covenant put into words a wish never voiced be fore: an independent Finland.UNDER TWO CROWNS, published by the Regional Council of Kymenlaakso, deals with the birth of the first thoughts of independence. It is a collection of papers given at a series of seminars held in 1988-90 in which eminent historians examine the events and consequences of Gustavus's War and the fate of the areas known as Old Finland ceded by Sweden to Russia in 1721 and 1743.
