It was common to transform longer swords in good condition and of very good quality in wakizashis or shorter katanas to adapt to the combats of the Edo period, which occurred in smaller spaces than the old battlefields. Many were used in the cities for defense and needed a shorter size to adapt to these situations and not get stuck in furniture or columns.
