16th Century Italian Short Sword

$11.74 $22.66
16th Century Italian Short Sword RESERVED A very early Italian short sword from circa 1500’s, what we consider to be the height a fine Italian arm of the Renaissance. this design of short sword popularity during the period from the 1500 – 1600 mean than many examples survive. Today and in almost every example the sword displays increasing evidence of its use in close combat. The overall shape, design is reminiscent of the design of the cinquedea. This type of sword is commonly referred to as ”Storta” or “Coltellacio”, due to its straighter blade, with more examples having a curved but stout blade. The hilt of the sword is comprised off a set of double curved quillons with a side ring, the grip is comprised of a tightly bound wire wrap with two ferrules holding the binding in place. The pommel is it raised cap with the oval profile and engravings which cover the circumference of the edge. Looking down at the Pommel You can see a beautiful floral motif engraved into the cap with the tang button simulating the core of the flower. The blade is a double edge design with a double fuller which extends 80% of the blade. The blade is also engraved on the ricasso and on the upper section of the spine on either side, these engravings include lines, eyelash marks and also a very distinct mark which can only be described a form of squiggle. this mark which is found on many sections of the blade identifies the sword as being an early representation from Rome or Emilia, since we believe the sword was made in the workshops of Ercole Dei Fedeli who practiced his trade in both Rome and Emilia. Examples bearing this mark Are dated anywhere from 1480 to 1510. this blade shows the same characteristics of other swords I have personally owned and studied by having many areas of the blades edge showing extreme trauma. While the blade is not a double-edged blade a large portion of the spine from the tip running toward the start of the markings also held an edge. This blade allowed for the sword to be used for both trusting and hacking. The hilt which is a crab hilt design accompanied with the side ring would have offered good protection as the sword is meant to be used in conjunction with speed as it is light at only 0.8kg. While the blade is very broad it still allows for very good balance and control due to the shorter size. A work or Art, truly a rarely Renaissance sword of Museum quality!
