5th to 10th Century Gold Inlaid Frankish Francisca Axe RESERVED This fantastic and exquisite Frankish axe from the 5th to 10th century also referred to as Francisca or Francesca. This axe saw popularity during the Merovingian dynasty from the 5th century until 751. The Carolingian Dynasty that followed, which was formed from Frankish noble families named after Charlemagne. The dynasty secured its position in the 8 century and flourished to 1050 and there is no doubt that this axe style and design carried on over the centuries. Many references to the Vikings, Anglo Saxons and Germanic tribes having used this style of axe. Whether this is an Axe from the Merovingian, or a Viking axe it is from a pivotal point in medieval history. This Frankish axe is quite spectacular, the shape of the head is unique. This shape narrows down the use and purpose of this axe, the presents of gold inlay elevates it to a higher level. The style points to this being a Frankish throwing or belt axe. The Vikings used this weapon as it was very effective in close combat. The axe head has been well preserved for its age and certainly it was made with expert craftmanship. The blade has been likely been reprofiled over its long life and now not longer holds an edge. The socket which allows for the wooden shaft to be inserted still had the iron wedge. Therefore, once the protective coating is removed it should reveal the of period wood. Closer inspection over the fittings reveals the likely presents of brazing with copper, a material which was considered precious and were utilised extensively in the fit and finish off both the blades, axes and fittings.
