13th to 15th Century European Bauernwehr Short Sword “Bauernwehr knife belongs to the family of so-called Langmessers. It appears in the second half of the 15th century. Around 1470 it was already quite widespread and popular weapon among peasants, burghers and the lower nobility. It was most widespread in Switzerland, southern and central Germany and Austria”. “Often referred to simply as a knife in contemporary sources, it was considered the weapon of the people and was sometimes used iconographically to depict estates and professions such as farmers and carters , while weapons such as daggers and swords were considered to be the status of nobles and patricians. Nevertheless, there were very preciously equipped specimens that are also owned by high nobility. However, the boundary to the tool is fluid in the peasant militia. Characteristic features are a single-edged, straight or saber-shaped blade and a wide hilt to which wooden or horn handle scales are riveted. A simple bracket was often used as hand protectionAngel and blade, which was contemporary known as a nail. Peasant guards were particularly popular in the Peasants’ War of 1525 and could reach lengths of up to 80 cm. Related to these weapons are the so-called “long knives”, which played an important role in Renaissance fencing”. These swords are super rare when they are in a fine state of preservation. This particular sword has all original parts with no loose fitting. The overall condition is excellent considering the age of this short sword, the sword integrity is still intact and the object is forged of one solid piece with a hand guard on the guard.
