Executioners Sword 16th – 17th Century This early sword originates from Germany, italy or France, the script is in Latin and the sword truly tells a story as it has been used extensivly. These sword served a dual purpose from the actual execution process to the judicial process. Germany is the primary source for information on such swords as they were used extensively in their justice system and many record exist to this day. The hilt is a crucifix form iron guard are in decent condition for such a used sword. The grip is the original wood which is not the best condition due to the extensive use the sword has been through. The guard and the pommel are both loose and the pommel can be rotated. This is due to the warping and expanding wooden grip. This in it day would have held the pieces firmly in place. The blade is a sturdy double edge design with the usual flattened tip, the blade shows extensive contact areas and some stress cracks. There are several holes that have been filled in. Their configuration is quiet unusual but many executioners swords has holes in the front end of the blade. There are many speculation why this was done from adding weights and the sound the blade would make when swung. The blade is marked with the wheel of justice and many other engravings that unfortunately are hidden due to the extensive blade corrosion.
